Could Samsung's smartwatch be the 'Galaxy Gear?' | Android Central

Samsung

Trademark application specifically mentions wearable devices and wristwatches

Samsung has made no secret of the fact that it's working on its own smartwatch, and in recent days the Korean press has been reporting that the device could make an appearance at a Berlin event in September ahead of IFA 2013. Today brings the first news of a possible name for the device, as the Korean company has filed a trademark application for "Samsung Galaxy Gear" at the United States Patents and Trademarks Office.

The application specifies that the mark would be used in relation to —

"Wearable digital electronic devices in the form of a wristwatch, wrist band or bangle capable of providing access to the Internet and for sending and receiving phone calls, electronic mails and messages; wearable electronic handheld devices in the form of a wristwatch, wrist band or bangle for the wireless receipt, storage and/or transmission of data and messages and for keeping track of or managing personal information; smart phones; tablet computers; portable computers."

— which is a rather long-winded way of describing a smartwatch-type device.

Interestingly, the use of the "Galaxy" name suggests that the device may well run Android — at least, we can't think of a Galaxy-branded device that hasn't run Google's OS.

But it's worth remembering that a trademark application doesn't necessarily mean the name is a lock for use with an upcoming product, just that Samsung wants to scoop up rights to the name. Trademarks are frequently filed by tech companies but never used — in Samsung's case it applied for the name Galaxy Fonblet earlier in the year, before ditching it in favor of the less ridiculous Galaxy Mega moniker.

In any case, wearable devices are here to stay, and it looks like Samsung could be the first Android OEM to get in on the smartwatch revolution.
